Movement and play are essential not only for child development and learning, but for survival. One in three children has obesity, increasing risk for diabetes, early heart attack, and stroke.
Disconnect to Reconnect
Connection to technology is disconnecting children from self, others, nature, and spirit. Social networking increases risk of child depression, anxiety, loneliness, and relationship conflict.
Parents think the safest place for their child is indoors. Daily access to 'green space' improves mental and physical health, and enhances attention and learning.
In the absence of the parent, children are forming unhealthy attachments to technology. One in eleven children is now addicted to texting, Facebook, video games and/or pornography.
Children aren't born mentally ill, adults make them that way by ignoring their basic need for attachment.Parents and teachers need to disconnect from technology, and reconnect with children. Co-regulation leads to self-regulation.
Unplug - Don't Drug
Attachment to technology results in behavior problems, mental illness, and addiction. One in six children has a diagnosed mental illness; many are on toxic medication. Bad behavior is a "symptom", not a diagnosis.
Trained to Kill
Violence is not innate, it is a learned behavior. The brain is like a camera, and replays hard wired images...forever.Children who are exposed to violent media content may act out aggressively, physically, and sexually toward their peers.
The brain prunes neurons which aren't used. Technology overuse results in reduction of neuronal tracks to the frontal cortex.Frontal cortex is the brain's center for controlling impulses, executive function, attention, and learning.
Children who overuse technology are experiencing memory loss, distraction, and inability to concentrate... termed digital dementia. One in 10 children now has adhd; children who can't pay attention cannot learn. The de-evolution of the human species has begun.
Education technology is not evidence based; scanning facts is not learning. Teachers teach, not technology. Back to the 3 R's. One in three children now enter school developmentally delayed, will not attain job literacy, and will fail to complete high school.
The ways in which we are raising and educating our children with technology are not sustainable. For the first time in the history of humankind, due to technology overuse, many children will not outlive their parents.
Four critical factors which enhance child development and learning are movement, touch, human connection, and nature. Technology is a restraint. Any time spent with technology is detrimental to child development and learning.
There is no evidence that education technology does anything other than entertain children. Literacy rates are at an all time low. Get back to basics! Trade computers for playground upgrades, and teach children how to print and read.
Health Provider Initiatives
Sedentary, overstimulated, neglected, and isolated, children have never been sicker than they are today.Routine technology screening, and provision of education and technology reduction tools for parents is imperative.
Why is government silent, and why are they not taking action to protect our children? Legislate risk warnings on all child technology products, regulate internet gaming and porn industries, educate parents with public health campaigns.
Research regarding the detrimental impact of technology on children fails to reach the general public. Researchers should ensure media releases pertinent information through organized distribution channels.
